A team consisting of Bruce Appel, Professor and Head of the Section of Developmental Biology and Diane G. Wallach Chair of Pediatric Stem Cell Biology, Wendy Macklin, Professor and Chair of the Department of Cell and Developmental Biology, Santos Franco, Associate Professor of Developmental Biology, and Ethan Hughes, Associate Professor of Cell and Developmental Biology, received one of three 2025 CU ASPIRE awards. Their project, entitled, “Molecular Mechanisms of Activity-Regulated Myelination” aims to determine how neuronal activity regulates gene expression in myelinating glial cells.

We recieved a new NIMH R21 grant entitled, “A Synaptogenic Adhesion Code for Myelin Specificity”. This project aims to elucidate underlying causes of white matter abnormalities in neurodevelopmental disorders. This is our first grant from NIMH!
Sheila Gupta, a MSTP and Molecular Biology student, received a three year NRSA F31 fellowship award from the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke for her project entitled, “Axon selection for myelination by excitatory postsynaptic factors”.
Katie Ranard received an NIH/NINDS K99/R00 Pathway to Independence Award (K99NS144387) to study how nutritional status impacts mechanisms guiding brain development. Her project will use a novel omega-3 fatty acid deficient zebrafish model and powerful live-imaging approaches to reveal the role of maternal nutrition in neurodevelopment at single-cell resolution.
Paige Souder, a Pediatrics/Medical Genetics resident, obtained grants from the Colorado Clinical and Translational Trials Institute and the Glendorn Foundation to initiate her investigations of Huntington's disease using zebrafish as a model system.
Kelsey, a 2nd-year CSD graduate student, joined the lab in July 2023. She is pursuing her interests in developmental biology by developing projects in neural cell fate specification.
Kim Arena and Caleb Doll attended the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory Meeting on Zebrafish Neurobiology in November 2023 where Kim presented a poster and Caleb gave a talk. Kim also presented a poster at the Society for Developmental Biology meeting in Chicago in June.
Oscar Mendez traveled to Newcastle in August 2023 to attend the 29th International Complement Workshop.
Natalie Carey, Sam Bromley-Coolidge, Kadidia Adula, and Katie Ranard attended the XVI European Meeting on Glial Cells in Health and Disease in Berlin during July 2023. Here they are with our friend Uxue Balantzategi, who spent time with us during the first part of 2023.
Yan Zhou, a medical student on the research track, received the Best Molecular Genetics Poster Award at the 2023 Research Forum!
